Rumba music has been around for centuries. It began in the United States in the 1910s and has become a cultural icon. There are various types of musicians and bands that strictly play this type of sound. However, some mainstream artists do incorporate these kinds of tunes in their music.

Rumba music has several different styles. The Latin, African and Caribbean cultures among other islands have their own rhythm. In the 20s more clubs and music locations opened up to bring Rumba music to light. This type of sound is more forthcoming in the Latin culture where they take pride in this kind of music.

This style of sound began in Cuba, however began fairly popular in the African cultures. It was a start for neighbors gathering together for a party. The music started to play and everyone would have a fabulous time. Rumba music tradition would co-inside with various forms of celebration. This is still present in Cuba as of today. This style of expression is often misunderstood with similar sounds. However, more people are beginning to know the different between the music. Lew Quinn and Joan Sawyer introduced Rumba music in to the United States.

Even though, they brought the sound, a few years later Emil Coleman brought the band. In the 1920s, Emil Coleman produced the new sound in a society hotel in New York City. He was a Russian immigrant born in 1894. The sound was smooth and upbeat. He became the favorite of high-class people. Emil and his band would then play around the country at high fashioned parties.

When Rumba music became vastly popular in the late 20s, Xavier Cugat was in the sound stream. He was so fantastic at his field; he was dubbed the Rumba King. He was born in 1900 in Spain. During his life he was best known for the band leader of a Rumba and Latin style. He began his career as a classical musician, in the 1920s, he gave that up to the more popular sounds of the time. Then when the 30s rolled around, Xavier was believed to have started the Rumba music popularity with his song, El Manicero. His long life proved great success, Xavier died in 1990 from heart failure.

There are been various artists that have hit this type of music scene. The Cuban composers include Pablo Milans, Gonzalo Asencio and Agustan Pina. Other Rumba music composers entail Bio Ritmo, Los Munequitos de Matanzas, Peret and Rumbantela. Mainstream artists also dabble in the Rumba music. These include; Al Son, Desi Arnaz and Gwen Estefan.

The instruments that are used in Rumba music are quite different than other sounds. Various styles of Congo drums from the very small to the very large are presented. Two of the drums play a bass like sound while the other plays a higher pitch. Bongos are used as well to keep the beat moving along. A Quinto is another drum type that also emits a higher pitch sound. Palitos were commonly used for the beat of the music.

These are small wooden sticks that emitted a unique sound. A Cajon is an empty box type that is made out of wood. Shakers are also used in Rumba music today. Various procession instruments are used as well as vocals for high rhythm and sounds. Horns play a large part in this type of music. The piano is a fabulous background for different styles of drums and wooden instruments.

Throughout the different cultures and changing times, Rumba music stayed steady. There are various versions of this type of sound through different countries. There have been famous Rumba kings as well as backstreet performers. This style of music is preformed mainly in the Latin scene, however various clubs and other locations still continue to charm with this style of sound. The Rumba music began in neighborhood streets as a form of celebration.

This practice continues to this day. It is still a major form of celebration and it is becoming stronger in diverse cultures. Several types of musicians in the mainstream light have created orchestras and bands to remain in the limelight. There are several versions of Rumba music that a person can enjoy and participate in. Nightclubs and other forms of entertainment locations can assist in showing the true meaning of Rumba music. It is from a time when people choose to create their own entertainment. Throughout the years, it has become one of the more popular forms of leisure.
